Trying to Learn How to Draw The Human Body in 14 Days
Week 1:
Day 0:
I attempted a quick sketch to show my current art ability. It is most definitely a rough sketch.
Day 1:
This day I chose to create some sketches that represented the proportions of the human body. I can draw these items without too much strife.
Day 2:
I was busy so I missed a day, that is on me.
Day 3:
Now I am going to be doing something that I call focus work. It is where you choose something that you are bad at drawing as a small part of something. Like eyes, for example, watch videos or reference images and practice to improve. For these first ones, I am going to focus on facial features. This one I practiced drawing mouths. The video I used.
This is one of the worst practices I have done. I understand that may seem harsh to say about my work, but it is accurate and won’t discourage me. Lips and mouths will definitely need more practice. I got the shape correct but the colors are off.
Day 4:
For my second day of focus work, I will be practicing the nose. I will be doing a few designs trying to cover a nice variety. This is the video I used.
With the nose, I got the shape but the color is still not there. It looks more like a potato than a nose. I am mostly happy with the result. I don’t think I will need to do the too much dedicated practice.
Day 5:
I practiced creating eyes. This is the video I used.
I am very happy with the color, It is a nice mix that I was able to achieve. But the shape feels a little sharp for such a round object. Also, I seemed to forget to add eyebrows. Overall I think it was a success.
Day 6:
I couldn’t think of something specific to improve so I used this day to relax.
Day 7:
Using everything that I have worked on, I drew a human face. I didn’t look at a video but I used images for reference size and proportions.
This day the goal was to draw a face with proportion references. It looks fairly good, the lips turned out better than expected. The position of the facial features is good. But now here comes the gripes, the eyes are too small. The ears have a very odd shape. From the right ear to the hairline is too far. And the linework is too thick.
Week 2
Day 8:
I did another set of focus work. I practiced feet. Video.
This is the worst of the focus works. But it is understandable because this is what I had the most problems with before. It will definitely need more practice, the only one that I think looks good is the one shoe on the bottom left.
Day 9:
For the next few days, I will be working on focus work. This time I did clothes. Video.
Now this one turned out pretty good, I like the folds in the clothes and the shape of the somewhat 3D form in the one to the right. I don't think I will need to do more direct practice with it.
Day 10:
Focus work. Hands. Vid.
Incredibly proud of myself with this one. But I have never really had a huge problem with drawing hands. These are still some of my best practice work.
Day 12–14:
The final challenge. The complete culmination of all my work in this article. I will preface this with the fact that I took significantly longer than the first one.
I think the structure turned out good. It functioned well for me to build off of it later. My biggest critique is that the position makes the figure look a little dead not as animated as I wanted.
I colored the shirt and started the armor. But the main thing I did was make most of the lines a different color so that I would be less noticeable. I think it may have been better if I left it all black.
I think overall I think I did great. Two things I can improve are skin color and the lifeless look. It still looks dead even with the colors.
In Conclusion:
I am very happy with the results. But I also understand that I want to improve beyond this level of experience. It was more of a practice to gain confidence so that I can include it in other works. I truly hope that if you try this method you will have as much success. Thank you for reading.
